Downtown Markham is designed as a European-inspired mixed-use community. The vibrant urban centre is built at a human scale that promotes car-free travel, with all retail amenities, numerous parks, streams and other green spaces located within easy walking distance.
"Downtown Markham is a unique development in Canada, built from the ground-up to integrate with, rather than build over, the natural environment," says Rudy Bratty, Chairman and CEO, The Remington Group. "Residents of Downtown Markham can live, work and play in an economically vibrant community that emphasizes sustainable development, public space, alternative energy and a higher quality of life."
Building design follows sustainable guidelines, including energy efficient power sources and LEED certified residential developments. Downtown Markham also features urban design that reflects and respects the natural environment, all built at a level of quality that will attract even greater numbers of residents to the Town of Markham.
Sustainable Growth
The Town of Markham and Province of Ontario are both working to accommodate urban growth while minimizing sprawl. Downtown Markham's design allows for greater density in an environmentally friendly urban area. The community's 98 hectares (243 acres) will become home to 9,500 residents living in 3,900 new condominiums and townhouses.
More than 16,000 people will work in approximately 4.2 million square feet of office space in the development. The community also features easy access to public transit, including Viva and GO Transit.
Foundation for Economic Success
The Town of Markham's history of economic success will be strengthened by the arrival of Downtown Markham. Economic clusters across the continent are in competition with each other for skilled workers. As the Town moves to expand upon its past successes, the new vibrant community will attract a cosmopolitan knowledge workforce searching for a community offering access to the arts and culture, shopping, leading schools, and numerous natural recreation areas for families.
